LONDON—British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a nationwide lockdown in England, the latest move in a widening European effort to contain the coronavirus’s resurgence. From Thursday, bars, restaurants and nonessential stores must close, and people must stay at home, with limited exceptions for work, education and exercise, Mr. Johnson said at a news conference.
