The Supreme Court announced on Monday that Rebecca Anne Womeldorf has been named the new reporter of decisions. She succeeds Christine Luchok Fallon, who retired in September. Womeldorf will begin her new job on Jan. 13, 2021.

The reporter of decisions plays an important behind-the-scenes role in the Supreme Court’s release of opinions. She prepares a summary, known as a syllabus, of each opinion; she also edits the opinions and oversees the process of publishing them in the United States Reports.

Womeldorf, who is the second woman to serve as the reporter of decisions, comes to the Supreme Court from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, where she served as (among other things) chief counsel to the staff of the Rules Committee. Womeldorf is not entirely new to the Supreme Court, however: From 1992 to 1993, she served as a law clerk to then-retired Justice Lewis Powell and Justice Anthony Kennedy.
